Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

27 Jun

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of those perfect albums that seemed to come out nowhere. Simple yet quirky and passionate guitar playing. Interesting melodies and cool lyrics, while not always sung perfectly, the passion makes up for it. This is one of the best albums of the late ’90′s. It seems to have taken on a life of it’s own through the 2000′s and it seems that more people are discovering this album by the day. I heard a piece on NPR where a high school put on a musical based on the album! Tracks have been covered by many prominent musicians. It’s a must-have.

Jane’s Addiction – Ritual de lo Habitual

2 Jun

Jane’s Addiction’s first three records are all must own.  1990′s Ritual de lo Habitual brought them mainstream attention with the super-catchy “Been Caught Stealing” single and video, but it’s the rest of the album that makes this album epic. “Three Days” alone make this album worth the price of admission!

Jimi Hendrix – Axis: Bold As Love

20 May

All of the Jimi Hendrix Experience albums are must-own-records. But my absolute favorite one is the middle one, Axis: Bold as Love. Awesome well-know tracks include “Castles Made of Sand”, “Little Wing” and the title track. Lesser-known but killer tracks include “If 6 was 9″, “You’ve Got Me Floatin’”, “Spanish Castle Magic” and “Wait Until Tomorrow”. Overall a nearly perfect album that needs to be listened through in it’s entirety.

R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio

18 May

The soaring voice of the incredible Ronnie James Dio has been silenced, he sadly passed away Sunday of stomach cancer. I’ve been listening to one of his best records, Heaven and Hell, his 1980 first outing with Black Sabbath. Thanks for the rock, RJD!

AC/DC Back in Black

16 May

There are lots of good AC/DC records, including most of the Bon Scott output. But no album is bigger and badder than 1980′s Back in Black. Crank up your stereo, drop the needle on side one track one, listen to a couple crackles and then when the open riff kicks in: “baaah … baa-na-na-na … baa-na-na-na” … you’ll know immediately what’s so great about a good hard rocking tune on vinyl!
